BEARING CONNECTING ROD 040 (SET OF 4)
Connecting Rod Bearing 0.40 Undersize
Set of 4 bearing shells for reground crankshaft
Complete set of four connecting rod bearings in 0.040" (1.02 mm) undersize specification for the 134 ci L-head "Go Devil" and F-head "Hurricane" engines. These bearing shells are designed for crankshafts whose connecting rod journals have been reground 0.040" during an engine rebuild.

★ Essential component during engine rebuild with crankshaft regrinding. Modern bearing alloys require slightly greater oil clearance than original WWII specifications — follow your bearing manufacturer's recommendations.
Application
Fits all vehicles with L-134 (1941-1953) and F-134 (1952-1971) engines: Willys MB (1941-1945), Ford GPW (1941-1945), Hotchkiss M201, Willys CJ-2A (1945-1949), CJ-3A (1948-1953), CJ-3B (1953-1968), M38 (1950-1952) and M38A1 (1952-1971). Also suitable for civilian Jeepster, Truck and Station Wagon models fitted with these engines.
Installation notes
Crankshaft journals must be reground to exactly 0.040" undersize by an engine reconditioner. Check oil clearance with plastigauge — recommended clearance varies depending on modern alloys (often 0.001"-0.003" greater than original WWII specifications). Bearing shells must fit tightly in the connecting rod and cap due to built-in 'spread'. Fit with locating tang in the correct recess. Observe correct connecting rod fitting direction: short side of offset towards nearest main bearing, oil squirt hole towards filler tube side. Connecting rod bolt torque: 35-45 lb-ft (47-61 Nm).
Compatibility
ONLY suitable for crankshafts reground 0.040" undersize. ALWAYS verify actual crankshaft dimension — these bearings will NOT fit standard or other undersize specifications (.010,.020,.030). Standard journals require standard bearings. If in doubt: measure the crankshaft or consult the label that the engine reconditioner should have fitted to the reground crankshaft. Connecting rod bearings and main bearings may have different undersize specifications — check both separately.
Historical context
The Willys L-134 "Go Devil" engine carried millions of Allied soldiers through WWII. During engine rebuilds, crankshaft journals are reground in steps of 0.010" — first.010, then.020,.030 and finally.040 undersize, which is typically the maximum regrind dimension for these engines.
