Breather hose oil filler tube to air cleaner

For closed crankcase ventilation

Rubber breather hose connecting the oil filler tube to the air cleaner housing. Part of the closed crankcase ventilation system that directs filtered air to the crankcase and prevents overpressure.

Material

Oil-resistant rubber

Function

Crankcase ventilation

System

PCV / closed breather

Connection

Oil filler tube to air cleaner

Features

  • Oil-resistant rubber compound
  • Connects oil filler tube to air cleaner
  • Part of closed PCV system
  • Prevents dust and dirt entering crankcase
  • Essential for proper engine ventilation

★ This breather hose is an essential component of the closed crankcase ventilation system. Without correct connection, the crankcase may build up overpressure or draw in unfiltered air.

Application

Late production vehicles with closed crankcase ventilation system. Early vehicles had an open system with road draft tube without this hose connection. Check whether your oil filler tube has a breather nipple.

Installation notes

Connect to the breather nipple on the side of the oil filler tube and the connection on the air cleaner housing. Ensure tight hose clips — leaks in this system disrupt crankcase ventilation. On F-head engines, a T-piece may be used to also connect the rocker cover.

Compatibility

Only for vehicles with later oil filler tube having a breather nipple. Early MB/GPW until approximately early 1943 (engine number <204040) had no vent on the oil filler tube and used only a road draft tube. CJ-3B with F-head engine often used a T-piece to connect multiple breather points.

Historical context

The closed crankcase ventilation system was introduced from early 1943 on the Willys L-134 engine to reduce engine contamination and ensure filtered air supply to the crankcase — an improvement over the earlier open road draft tube system.
