★ Accurate reproduction of the original Carter WO carburettor, complete with professional setting tools. Ready to fit, only fine adjustment of idle speed and mixture screw required.
Application
Developed for the Willys L-134 'Go Devil' L-head engine. Stud spacing: 2-3/8" (60 mm) centre-to-centre. Throttle bore: 30 mm. Fits inlet manifolds with 3/8"-24 threaded studs. Note: For M38, modification of the air intake system is required (M38 uses Carter YS-637S with offset head as standard).
Installation notes
Before fitting, check that the float height is correctly set (3/8" / 9.5 mm) using the supplied T109-80 gauge. Ensure new gaskets are fitted between carburettor and manifold. Tighten mounting nuts evenly. After fitting: open idle mixture screw 1 to 2 turns from fully closed (do not force tight). Fine tuning with warm engine: idle speed 600 rpm (vehicle speed ± 13 km/h). Engine must be correctly ignited (spark plugs, points, ignition) — a new carburettor will not resolve other engine problems.
Compatibility
Carter WO (also known as Carter Model W-O) was used in WWII on Willys MB and Ford GPW. An identical carburettor (sometimes with very minor differences in patent marking or linkage details) was also used on early civilian jeeps. The differences between WWII 539S and post-war versions (636S, 698S) are minimal and do not affect operation. Note: M38 used the Carter YS-637S with offset head as standard; a Carter WO will only fit with a modified air intake system.
Historical context
The Carter WO was the standard carburettor on the Willys MB and Ford GPW WWII jeeps fitted with the L-134 'Go Devil' engine. Carter produced the 539S model during the war; after 1945 slightly modified variants followed such as the 636S and 698S (circa 1947-1954) with additional patent numbers on the float bowl, but with identical operation and dimensions.
