Carter WO Metering Rod Adjustment Gauge

Carter T109-26 Metering Rod Gauge

Precision adjustment gauge for correctly setting the fuel metering rod in Carter WO carburettors. Essential tool during overhaul or adjustment of the carburettor to ensure a correct air-fuel mixture.

Tool type

Metering rod gauge

Carter part number

T109-26 (Army: 41-G-196-50)

Application

Carter WO carburettor

Function

Metering rod height adjustment

Features

  • Original Carter design adjustment gauge
  • Essential during carburettor overhaul
  • Guarantees correct fuel mixture
  • Prevents engine running too rich or too lean
  • Used according to TM 9-1826A specifications

★ This gauge is essential tooling for any Carter WO carburettor overhaul. Without correct adjustment of the metering rod, the carburettor will not function optimally.

Application

Used for adjustment of Carter WO carburettors as fitted to vehicles with L-134 engine. The metering rod must be adjusted with closed throttle — the adjustment pin must just fit in the gauge notch according to TM specifications. Later manuals (TM 9-1826A) specify max. 005" clearance between pin and shoulder of the gauge.

Installation notes

Completely unscrew the throttle adjustment screw and fully close the throttle. Place the T109-26 gauge under the metering rod adjustment pin. Loosen the lock nut and adjust the pin until it fits in the gauge notch (or according to later spec: a slight clearance of max. 005"). Tighten the nut securely. Remove the gauge and fit the metering rod with washer and spring. Always test operation: at idle a small clearance must be visible between the metering rod eye and the adjustment pin.

Compatibility

Exclusively for Carter WO (Model W-O) carburettors, such as Carter 539S and 636S versions. Not suitable for other carburettor types such as Zenith, Solex or later Carter YF models. Note: the adjustment procedure changed between 1942 and 1944 — early TM 10-1513 specified the pin "seated in notch", later TM 9-1826A specified "less than 0.005 inch clearance". Both methods have been used, engine response is decisive for final adjustment.

Historical context

The Carter T109-26 metering rod gauge was supplied by Carter Carburetor Company as standard adjustment gauge with Carter WO carburettors from WWII. The Army stock number was 41-G-196-50. Correct adjustment of the metering rod is critical for the economizer operation of the Carter WO — a carburettor design applied during WWII on millions of Willys and Ford military vehicles.
