Carter carburettor idle adjustment screw for Ford GPA, GPW, Willys MB Slat & MB

Idle mixture adjustment screw

Idle mixture adjustment screw for the Carter WO carburettor. This screw regulates the fuel-air mixture during idling and is the only external adjustment screw on the Carter WO. Essential for correct engine tuning.

Application

Carter WO carburettor

Function

Idle mixture adjustment

Vehicle

Ford GPA, GPW, Willys MB Slat & MB

Part number

WO-116174 / GPW-9567

Features

  • External adjustment screw for idle mixture
  • Only service adjustment on Carter WO carburettor
  • Compensates for carbon deposits in carburettor
  • Standard setting: 1 to 2 turns open from closed position
  • Replacement part for worn or damaged screw

★ This idle adjustment screw is a replacement part for the Carter WO carburettor. According to TM 9-803, this is the only external adjustment on the carburettor.

Application

Ford GPA (amphibious jeep), Ford GPW, Willys MB (including Slat Grill), CJ-2A and CJ-3A with Carter WO carburettor (model numbers CAR-539S, WO-A1223, GPW-9510). Also M38 if adapted for Carter WO carburettor.

Installation notes

Standard adjustment per TM 9-803: turn screw fully clockwise (carefully, do not force against seat), then turn back 1 to 2 turns. Fine tuning with warm engine: adjust until engine idles smoothly at approximately 600 rpm. An incorrectly adjusted screw may cause rough idling or prevent the engine from starting.

Compatibility

Exclusively for Carter WO carburettors on Willys L-134 'Go Devil' engine. Not for Zenith or Solex carburettors. Note: when replacing jets from rebuild kits, settings may differ — original jets are preferable if in good condition.

Historical context

The Carter WO was the standard carburettor on WWII Willys MB and Ford GPW jeeps (1941-1945), as well as on the amphibious Ford GPA 'Seep' and early post-war CJ models. The idle adjustment screw was, according to Army documentation, the only external adjustment screw, enabling straightforward field maintenance.
