Application
This fuel filter assembly fits Willys MB (1941-1945), Ford GPW (1941-1945), Hotchkiss M201 (post-war French licence production) and M38 (1950-1952). Please note: not all vehicles originally had a fuel filter on the firewall — early MB/GPW models often had an in-tank filter. The firewall-mounted version was applied later.
Installation notes
Attach the filter bracket with two bolts to the firewall. Connect the supply line (from tank) to the 'IN' side and the outlet line (to pump) to the 'OUT' side — these are often marked with arrows. When replacing the cartridge, new gaskets are recommended: rubber gasket (medium size) between bowl and body, small gasket under central bolt. Fill the bowl with clean petrol before tightening to prevent air entrapment.
Compatibility
Compatible with Willys MB, Ford GPW, Hotchkiss M201 and M38. Please note: Ford GPW reproductions are generally not 'F'-marked. The diameter of the central spindle/bolt varies: standard is 12 mm — filter cartridges are NOT compatible with 13.5 mm diameter spindles. Check which version your vehicle has before ordering a replacement cartridge.
Historical context
The firewall-mounted fuel filter was introduced during the Second World War as an upgrade to the simple in-tank filter. This system offered better filtering and simpler maintenance in field conditions, with the transparent bowl allowing quick visual inspection for contamination.
