COUNTERWEIGHT HEAT CONTROL VALVE LEVER
Heat riser valve counterweight lever
For exhaust manifold heat riser valve
Counterweight for the heat riser valve in the exhaust manifold. Works in conjunction with the thermostatic spring to operate the butterfly valve that redirects exhaust gases along the inlet manifold for faster warm-up during cold starts.

Application L-134 engine with heat riser valve |
Function Weight arm for valve actuation |
Features
- Counterweight for heat riser valve mechanism
- Attached to the butterfly valve shaft
- Must swing freely for correct operation
- Works in conjunction with thermostatic spring
- Component of heat riser valve system
★ Essential component for correct operation of the heat riser valve system which ensures better cold starts and faster engine warm-up.
Application
For vehicles with L-134 L-head engine fitted with heat riser valve in the exhaust manifold. The heat riser valve system was fitted to military jeeps and early civilian models with L-head configuration.
Installation notes
The counterweight must move freely and must not bind. When engine is cold, the counterweight closes the valve; upon warming, the thermostatic spring opens the valve and tilts the counterweight. Check during installation that the weight does not bind and can follow gravity. Incorrect orientation (upside down) prevents correct operation.
Compatibility
Only for L-head engines with heat riser valve system. F-head engines (Hurricane) do not have a heat riser valve in the exhaust manifold and do NOT use this component. Hotchkiss M201 with L-134 engine: compatible.
Historical context
The heat riser valve was an early solution for better cold starts, whereby exhaust gases were temporarily redirected to warm the inlet manifold and improve fuel vapourisation before the choke system became electronically controlled.
