Heat riser control valve shaft exhaust manifold

For L-134 engine

Drive shaft for the heat riser control valve mechanism in the L-134 engine exhaust manifold. This shaft carries the butterfly valve which, when the engine is cold, directs exhaust gases along the inlet manifold for improved fuel vapourisation. Driven by a bi-metal spring which opens the valve as the engine warms up.

Application

Exhaust manifold L-134 engine

Function

Butterfly valve heat control drive

Material

Steel

Supply

Shaft only (excl. control, valves, bearings)

Features

  • Drive shaft for heat riser control valve in exhaust manifold
  • For L-134 four-cylinder engine
  • Carries the butterfly valve (flapper) inside manifold
  • Driven by bi-metal spring with counterweight
  • Prevents exhaust leakage via bearing bushes

★ Essential component for correct operation of the heat riser mechanism that improved cold starts on military vehicles.

Installation notes

The old bearing bushes must be driven out of the manifold for replacement. Butterfly valve (flapper) may be welded to shaft or secured with two small countersunk screws — check original before dismantling. Bi-metal spring rests on adjuster bracket and works against counterweight.

Compatibility

Only for engines with heat riser version of exhaust manifold. Later exhaust manifolds without heat riser system do not use this component. Often part of a repair kit (complete with bearing bushes, spring, washers and counterweight).

Historical context

The heat riser system was a standard feature on the L-134 engine to improve carburettor vapourisation during cold starts — essential for reliable starts in cold war zones.
