  • Carbon brushes in good condition, no wear
  • Commutator clean and unburnt
  • Armature rotates freely without resistance
  • No burnt or corroded wiring
  • Shunt-type generator with external regulation

★ This NOS generator is fully tested and ready for installation. Conforms to original WWII military specifications for reliable performance in a 6 volt electrical system.

Application

Developed for WWII military vehicles with 6 volt electrical installation. The Auto-Lite GEG-5001 series was used from 1941, the GEG-5101 series from early 1944. Both types are 40 ampere shunt generators suitable for vehicles originally equipped with this specification. Note: for correct mounting, the proper generator bracket is required (early bearing-type vs late bushing-type require different brackets).

Installation notes

After installation, the generator must be polarised: touch the B+ and F terminals simultaneously with a wire for 1 second (both connected to + battery terminal) to set the correct magnetic polarity. Test charging at idle (±6.3V) and at higher revs (7.0-7.5V measured at B+ terminal). System is either positive or negative earth depending on vehicle type — check before connection. Requires compatible 6V voltage regulator (not included).

Compatibility

This is a generic 6V 40A generator that fits multiple WWII vehicle types. NOTE: Auto-Lite produced different series (GEG-5001 with ball bearings, GEG-5002/5101 with bushing at rear) requiring different mounting brackets. Check which type was originally fitted to your vehicle. Not interchangeable with later 12V systems without complete conversion of the electrical system.

Historical context

Auto-Lite was a major supplier of electrical components to the US Army during WWII. The GEG-5001 series was produced from 1941, followed by the improved GEG-5002 (mid-1942) and GEG-5101 (early 1944) with modified bearing construction. Ford also produced their own variants under licence, marked with GPW numbers.
