Generator shaft 6/12 volt

For Auto-Lite generator

Armature shaft for 6 volt Auto-Lite generators, also suitable for 12 volt conversions. This is a critical component of the generator where the shaft carries the rotating armature and transmits the drive from the engine via the pulley to the electricity-producing part of the generator.

Type

Armature shaft

Voltage

6V / 12V

Vehicle

Willys MB, Ford GPW, CJ-2A, CJ-3A, CJ-3B

Application

Auto-Lite generator GEG/GDZ/GGW series

Features

  • Armature shaft for Auto-Lite 6V generators
  • Suitable for 12V conversions
  • Replacement part for worn shaft or bearings
  • Original specification
  • CNC manufactured

★ Essential replacement part for generator overhaul or 12V conversion of the electrical system.

Application

Suitable for Willys MB and Ford GPW with Auto-Lite 6V generators (GEG-5001, GEG-5101, GDZ-4817A, GDZ-6001D), as well as CJ-2A, CJ-3A and CJ-3B models. When converting to a 12V system, the shaft must be compatible with new 12V field coils and armature.

Installation notes

The generator must be completely disassembled to replace the shaft. Before fitting, check that the shaft rotates freely in the front and rear bearings. When replacing the shaft, the condition of the bearings, commutator and brushes should also be checked. Polarise the generator after fitting by briefly connecting the B+ and F terminals.

Compatibility

Note: not all Auto-Lite generators use the same shaft diameter and thread. Check that the existing pulley and nut fit this shaft — some replacement shafts have metric threads or narrower grooves. The shaft must fit exactly in the existing front and rear bearings (bronze or ball bearing).

Historical context

Auto-Lite was the standard supplier of electrical components for Willys-Overland during WWII and the early post-war period. Generator overhaul was standard maintenance on military vehicles — worn bearings or bent shafts were common due to severe operating conditions.
