Speedometer 0-60 MPH WW2 Early Model with Long Needle - AC Style

Mile scale with luminous pointer

Reproduction speedometer to early WW2 specifications with characteristic long needle as used in the first production phase of the MB and GPW. This AC-style speedometer features a 0-60 MPH scale in miles, analogue odometer with trip meter and illuminated pointer for night vision.

Scale

0-60 MPH (miles)

Diameter

5 inch (89 mm)

Type

Early WW2 model (long needle)

Features

Odometer + trip meter with reset

Features

  • AC style according to early WW2 production standard
  • Characteristic long needle extending beyond upper graduations
  • Luminous pointer for reading in darkness
  • Analogue odometer with trip meter and reset button at rear
  • 0-60 MPH scale graduated in miles

★ Reproduction to early production specifications, as used until the changeover to short needle in January-February 1943.

Application

Used in early production Willys MB and Ford GPW (1941-early 1943). The long needle was replaced by a short needle with crescent-shaped counterweight from January-February 1943. AC speedometers were also extensively used in other WW2 American military vehicles including the Dodge WC series.

Installation notes

Cable connection at rear. Note: the speedometer cable must not be pushed in too hard during fitting, as this may interfere with needle movement. Trip meter reset arm is located at the rear of the instrument. Mounting via standard dashboard bracket.

Compatibility

Replaceable by later short-needle models if the original early version is not required. Note: AC speedometers were not standard MB/GPW equipment — original WW2 jeeps typically had AutoLite, Motometer, King Seeley, Stewart Warner or Waltham brands. AC speedometers were, however, used in Dodge and other military vehicles.

Historical context

Early speedometers featured a long needle extending beyond the upper graduations. These were replaced in the first half of 1943 by speedometers with short needle and crescent-shaped counterweight, providing a more compact and robust design.
