★ High-quality reproduction with accurate detailing according to original late production specifications. The waterproof version with short needle was introduced in 1944 and remained in use until the end of production.

Application

Used from 1944 until end of production on late Willys MB and Ford GPW vehicles. The transition from long to short needle occurred mid-to-late 1943, after which the waterproof version (Type V) was introduced in early 1944. Also fits M38 (1950-1952) and M38A1 (1952-1971).

Installation notes

Direct replacement for original short needle speedometer. Mounting via standard clamp ring to dashboard panel. Connects to standard 60" speedometer cable. Note: different manufacturers (Autolite, Motometer, Stewart Warner, King Seeley) were used during WWII — internal mechanics and magnets are not interchangeable between makes.

Compatibility

NOT compatible with early jeeps (slat grille, early MB/GPW until 1943) which require long needle speedometer. Late short needle version fits: Late MB/GPW from mid-1943, M38, M38A1. Waterproof version is recognisable by longer housing for additional seal. Also used on some Dodge WC-series trucks.

Historical context

The evolution of the MB/GPW speedometer comprises five main types: Autolite Type I and II (slat grille), Motometer Type III (long needle, non-waterproof), Type IV (short needle, non-waterproof) and from 1944 the Type V with short needle and waterproof housing. The luminous needle and markings at 10 and 20 mph originally contained radium-based paint for night-time readability.
