★ Reproduction to WWII specifications. Felt was introduced during the war as a substitute for rubber due to material shortages and remained standard until end of production in 1945.
Application
Specific to Ford GPW produced between 1941-1945. These felt grommets became standard from late 1942/early 1943 replacing the earlier rubber grommets. Also suitable for Ford GPA amphibious jeep.
Installation notes
CRITICAL: fit the felt grommets AFTER the wiring/pipes have been passed through the holes — the cables will not pass through the narrow opening if the felt is already fitted. Only exception: choke and throttle cables can be fitted beforehand. Start at the slit, rotate the felt grommet 90° by hand, then continue with a blunt screwdriver. Push the felt radially outwards for more clearance. Caution: do not scratch the polished bodywork. The smallest grommets (oil and temperature gauge) are the most difficult — if necessary, bore out the internal diameter slightly. For oil pressure pipe: fit felt whilst the pipe passes through the hole but is NOT YET connected to the gauge.
Compatibility
This set is specific to the Ford GPW. The Willys MB used partially different configurations. From January 1944 the 'composite body' was introduced, used by both Ford AND Willys — check whether your GPW has the Ford-specific version. Not compatible with later civilian CJ models which use rubber grommets.
Historical context
During WWII, industry faced rubber shortages. Ford and Willys therefore switched from rubber to felt grommets for cable pass-throughs in late 1942/early 1943 — a pragmatic wartime solution that remained standard until the end of GPW production in 1945.
