Grounding strap kit for military jeep

Complete bond strap kit for 6V system

Complete set of grounding straps (bond straps) for WWII military jeeps with 6V system. These straps are essential for correct operation of the electrical system and ensure reliable starting, charging and lighting. Originally developed for radio interference suppression, they also fulfil a crucial function in creating a low-resistance earth connection — essential in a 6V system.

Material

Braided copper wire with metal eyelets

Application

6V electrical systems WWII jeep

Function

Earth connection + radio suppression

Type

Complete set with fixing hardware

Features

  • Braided copper grounding straps — low-resistance connections
  • Includes fixing bolts, nuts and star washers
  • For correct earth connection engine, dynamo, frame and body
  • Essential for reliable starting and charging with 6V system
  • Also fulfils radio interference suppression function

★ A correct earth connection via grounding straps is even more critical in a 6V system than with 12V: a voltage drop of 2V leaves only 4V from 6V (67% loss), whilst that same 2V from 12V still leaves 10V (17% loss). This set ensures reliable starting, correct charging and working lights.

Application

This grounding strap kit is suitable for WWII military jeeps with 6-volt electrical system. The set typically includes straps for: battery to frame, engine to frame (both engine sides), dynamo to regulator, cylinder head to wing/body, exhaust pipe to frame, bonnet to grille, and possibly throttle/choke cable conduit to body. Note: early and late production may have different configurations — early jeeps had radiator bond straps to frame (until approximately December 1943, Suppression I), late versions used star washers on radiator bolts (from approximately MB 289001, Suppression II). Therefore check your jeep's build date and variant before installation.

Installation notes

Remove paint/rust from all connection points — earth straps require metal-to-metal contact. Use star washers for extra grip. Essential straps for starting: (1) battery to frame, (2) engine to frame (at least one side, both sides is better), (3) cylinder head to body/wing. Ensure the battery cable is heavy enough — when in doubt: thicker is better. Check that the dynamo has a good earth (often rubber-mounted without earth strap). A correct set ensures quicker starting and better charging.

Compatibility

Jeeps with 6V system require heavy earth straps — a 6V system demands double the current compared to 12V. Do NOT use light 12V straps on a 6V jeep. If temporarily without correct straps, you can connect two 12V straps in parallel or use heavy copper wire (min. 10 gauge / 5mm²) with soldered eyelets. Note differences between early/late production: early jeeps (until approx. end 1943) had two radiator bond straps to studs on the front cross member; late jeeps (Suppression II, from approx. MB 289001 / December 1943) used star washers on radiator bolts and no longer had separate radiator straps. Check whether your frame has studs or not.

Historical context

The bond straps were introduced by the US Army as part of the Radio Interference Suppression System to suppress radio noise — unwanted RF emissions from sparking electrical systems could interfere with radio communications and betray the presence of vehicles. However, the grounding straps also contributed to a reliable electrical system, particularly with the 6V system where every ohm of resistance is critical.
