Application
For vehicles equipped with the Dana Spicer 18 transfer case. This transmission-driven transfer case was used on WWII military vehicles and early post-war models from 1941 onwards. Essential during any transfer case overhaul or when rectifying oil leaks.
Installation notes
Ensure all mating surfaces are completely clean and oil-free before assembly. Apply thin layer of gasket sealant (Permatex #2 or equivalent) on cover side, not on housing. Lubricate oil seal lips with grease before installation. Seal all bolts passing through to oil cavity with thread sealant. Seal shaft splines with sealant — critical leak point. Tighten bolts in cross pattern, avoid over-tightening.
Compatibility
Only suitable for Dana 18 transfer case. NOT compatible with Dana 20 or later models (although some gaskets are interchangeable). Note: there are three generations of Dana 18 with minor differences in intermediate shaft (3/4" early type vs 1-1/8" late type) — this set fits all variants.
Historical context
The Dana Spicer 18 was the standard transfer case for WWII military vehicles and remained in use until the early 1970s. The transmission-driven design with its characteristic cast iron housing was robust but prone to leakage when gaskets wore out.
