★ Quality gear for the legendary Dana 18 transfer case, suitable for authentic restoration projects of early WWII military vehicles.

Application

This gear fits Dana 18 transfer cases with the 27-tooth configuration as originally fitted to military jeeps from 1941-1946 (Willys MB, Ford GPW) and early CJ-2A models up to serial number CJ2A-24196. Later, different tooth counts were used (26 teeth from 1946-1953, 29 teeth from 1953-1971).

Installation notes

The Dana 18 transfer case must be disassembled to replace this gear. Removal of the rear bearing cap and output shaft is necessary. When replacing, also check the corresponding thrust washers (A-990) and snap ring (A-991). Use a copper or plastic mallet to prevent damage.

Compatibility

Please note: Dana 18 transfer cases have three different gear configurations over the years. The 27-tooth version (A-989) is ONLY suitable for early models up to approx. Later models use 26-tooth (1946-1953) or 29-tooth (1953-1971) gears. These are NOT interchangeable without replacing the complete gear set. Always check the number of teeth on your existing gear before ordering.

Historical context

The Dana Spicer Model 18 transfer case was a revolutionary design that made the Willys MB and Ford GPW the first successful four-wheel-drive production vehicles. This compact, gear-driven system set the standard for all subsequent 4x4 vehicles.
