Interlock Rod Transfer Case Shift

For Dana 18 transfer case

Original interlock rod for the shift rails of the Dana 18 transfer case. This component ensures that the high/low shift and the 2WD/4WD shift cannot be engaged simultaneously in different positions, preventing mechanical damage. Essential for correct operation of the twin-stick shift system.

Material

Steel

Transfer case type

Dana 18

Function

Interlock shift rails

Length

19 mm (3/4 inch)

Features

  • Prevents simultaneous shifting of both shift rails
  • Pin-shaped design with rounded ends
  • Sits between the high/low and 2WD/4WD shift rails
  • Essential for safe transfer case operation
  • Replacement part for worn or missing interlock

★ Critical component for the safety of your transfer case shift system. When replacing or overhauling the Dana 18 transfer case, it is important to check the interlock for wear.

Application

Suitable for vehicles with Dana 18 transfer case. Please note: when removing the front output/shift lever tower, the interlock floats freely between the shift rails and can easily be lost — use a magnet during disassembly.

Installation notes

The interlock floats freely between both shift rails and is held in place by the shift lever tower. During assembly: place both shift rails in neutral position (2WD and high range) for easier installation. Remove the front bearing cap/tower to gain access. Use a magnet to hold the interlock in place during assembly.

Compatibility

For Dana 18 transfer case only. Not compatible with Dana 20 or later transfer cases which use a different interlock system. Some owners deliberately remove the interlock to enable 2WD low range — however, this is not the original configuration.

Historical context

The Dana Spicer Model 18 transfer case was used from 1941 until the mid-1960s in military jeeps and civilian Willys vehicles. The twin-stick shift system with interlock was a proven design intended to prevent inadvertent shifting errors.
