Transfer case shift rod

For Dana 18 gearbox

Features

  • Shift rod for Dana 18 transfer case
  • Connects gear lever to internal shift forks
  • Fitted with poppet ball locking mechanism
  • Replacement part for worn or damaged rods
  • Suitable for twin-stick or single-stick configurations

★ Essential component for reliable shifting in the Dana 18 transfer case. Replacement necessary when worn or when shifting becomes difficult.

Application

Suitable for vehicles fitted with Dana 18 transfer case, as installed in CJ-2A (1946-1949), CJ-3A (1949-1953), CJ-3B (1953-1964), M38 (1950-1952) and M38A1 (1952-1971). Fits both early and late Dana 18 variants with different intermediate shaft diameters (3/4", 1-1/8" or 1-1/4").

Installation notes

Transfer case must be opened for replacement. Note the ball detent mechanism (poppet ball and spring) that holds the rod in position. In twin-stick configuration, there is an interlock pin between both shift rods which can be removed for independent operation. Check shift forks for wear when replacing the rod.

Compatibility

Fits all Dana 18 transfer cases from 1941-1971. Please note: this is NOT compatible with Dana 20 or Dana 300 transfer cases, which use different shift rods. When converting to twin-stick or vice versa, modifications to the shift mechanism may be required.

Historical context

The Dana 18 transfer case was designed from 1940 onwards and remained in production for thirty years - one of the most successful drivetrain components ever made. Early versions had a dual-shifter (twin-stick) system, later models often received a single-lever mechanism.
