★ Professional repair kit for a thorough overhaul of your transfer case intermediate shaft - the most heavily loaded component in the Dana 18.
Application
This 1-1/8" intermediate shaft kit fits the Dana 18 transfer case as fitted to various post-war jeeps. Always check the diameter of your existing shaft - Dana 18 transfer cases were supplied with three different shaft diameters (3/4", 1-1/8" and 1-1/4") depending on year and model.
Installation notes
The intermediate shaft must be driven out from the rear of the case using a dummy shaft. Install new needle bearings in the intermediate gear before fitting the assembly. Pay attention to correct placement of the thrust washers on both sides of the gear. The front side of the shaft is pressed into the case and requires precise alignment; use light silicone sealant for optimal sealing. During installation, check the O-ring at the rear for correct seating in the groove.
Compatibility
CRITICAL: Dana 18 transfer cases were built with three different intermediate shaft diameters. This kit is for 1-1/8" diameter. NOT compatible with 3/4" (original MB/GPW) or 1-1/4" (later models) shafts. Always measure your existing shaft diameter before ordering. The intermediate gear and bearings are NOT interchangeable between different shaft diameters.
Historical context
The Dana 18 transfer case was produced from 1941 for the Willys MB and was further developed for post-war civilian and military jeeps. The intermediate shaft is a known weak point - original shafts were often insufficiently hardened and wore quickly, resulting in characteristic noise when decelerating.
