Application
These early style springs are designed for Dana 18 transfer cases with twin-stick configuration where the shift lever has no groove. Suitable for vehicles as listed in the product categories: CJ-2A, CJ-3A, M38, M38A1 and CJ-3B with Dana 18 transfer case. Please note: there is also a late style variant (801332) with groove instead of hole — check which version fits your vehicle before ordering.
Installation notes
The spring is mounted on the shift lever pin via the hole in the spring. Ensure the spring is correctly positioned on the pin and provides sufficient tension without blocking the shifting movement. Check during installation that the poppet balls and springs are in good condition — worn components reduce the effectiveness of the anti-rattle springs.
Compatibility
IMPORTANT: This is the early style spring with a HOLE for the shift lever pin (A-970). The late style spring (801332, for 1954-1966) has a GROOVE. These are not interchangeable. Check your transfer case configuration: early style was used on MB, GPW, early CJ-2A, CJ-3A and early M38/M38A1 models. If in doubt: check whether the shift lever has a groove — if so, you need the late style spring.
Historical context
The Dana 18 was the standard offset transfer case in military and civilian jeeps from 1941 to 1971. The twin-stick configuration with separate shifters for 2WD/4WD and high/low range was characteristic of early models, including WWII production MB and GPW vehicles.
