Steering Worm Shaft with Tube

5 inch (103 cm) — Ross steering box

Length

5 inch (103 cm)

Steering box type

Ross-type steering gear box

Part number

A-8838

Application

Early Willys MB, Ford GPW and early CJ-2A

Features

  • Length 40.5 inch (103 cm)
  • Suitable for Ross-type steering box
  • Part A-8838 specification
  • Complete with worm gear
  • For early models up to 1948

★ High-quality reproduction of the original design, manufactured to original specifications for durability and correct fit.

Application

Fits Willys MB (1941-1945), Ford GPW (1941-1945) and Willys CJ-2A from 1945 to 1948 up to serial number 178631. Note: later CJ-2A models from serial number 178632 onwards use a longer 41.5 inch version.

Installation notes

During installation, pack the ball bearing with grease so it stays in place during assembly. Once the worm gear is inserted, it holds the bearings in position. Verify the correct model — early models use 40.5 inch, later models use 41.5 inch.

Compatibility

ONLY for early models: MB/GPW 1941-1945 and CJ-2A up to serial number 178631. NOT suitable for later CJ-2A (from serial number 178632 onwards), CJ-3A, CJ-3B or CJ-5 — these use the 41.5 inch version. The difference is critical for correct fitment.

Historical context

The Ross-type steering gear was standard equipment on the first military Jeeps during WWII. The worm gear system was reliable and simple to maintain under harsh combat conditions.
