Application
This early type steering wheel was used from March to October 1942 on early production MB and GPW vehicles, before the change to the metal spoke type from late 1942 onwards. Also applied to later M38 and M38A1 models.
Installation notes
Fits on standard 36-spline steering column. Check that your horn button is 1¼" diameter. Earliest Slat Grille MBs (1941 – March 1942) had the black bakelite Sheller-type (WO A-6858) – from March 1942, the khaki green type was introduced.
Compatibility
This khaki green bakelite type is NOT correct for Slat Grille MBs (built until March 1942) – those had the black bakelite type. From late 1942/early 1943, it was replaced by the steel spoke type with bakelite rim. Both types (bakelite and metal spokes) were applied to both MB and GPW – the myth that only GPWs had metal spoke wheels is incorrect.
Historical context
The Sheller bakelite steering wheel was a short-lived version during early WWII production. Bakelite (phenolic resin) was one of the first synthetic plastics and was widely used in the 1940s for its strength and heat resistance.
