★ Correct reproduction in solid zinc – Willys used solid zinc from mid-1942 until the end of production for their data plates, unlike Ford who used brass, steel and aluminium.
Application
Willys MB vehicles produced from mid-1942 to September 1945. The nomenclature plate was fitted as the centre plate of a three-plate set on the glove box door, flanked by the caution plate and the shift-instruction plate. Ford GPW vehicles had a comparable plate but in different materials (brass, steel or aluminium depending on production period).
Installation notes
Fixing with twisted rivets to the glove box. The plate is fitted as the centre plate between the caution plate (left) and shift-instruction plate (right). Special pressed nuts are used on the inside of the dashboard. During restoration: never punch or stamp before fitting – originally, plates were fitted first and then stamped with numbers.
Compatibility
Specific to Willys MB vehicles from mid-1942 onwards. Early Willys MB (until early 1942) used brass instead of zinc. Ford GPW vehicles used different materials: brass (early), galvanised steel (mid-war) or aluminium (late-war). The Hotchkiss M201 (post-war French production) also used zinc but with a different stamping set.
Historical context
From mid-1942, Willys-Overland used solid zinc for all data plates on the MB. The nomenclature plate stated the vehicle weight, patent numbers and technical classification as required by the U.S. Army Ordnance Department. Early production (until early 1942) still used brass.
