Application
Suitable for Ford GPW jeeps built from mid-June 1944 until end of production (May 1945). This shipping plate was introduced simultaneously with the ACM Type 2 composite body and was standard on all late production GPW's. The plate was fitted to the right-hand interior body side, behind the passenger seat.
Installation notes
The shipping plate is mounted with 4 self-tapping screws to the right-hand interior body side, behind the passenger seat. On late GPW's (mid-1944 to EOP) this plate was standard alongside the three data plates on the instrument panel flap. Mounting in pre-drilled holes.
Compatibility
ONLY for late Ford GPW (mid-June 1944 - May 1945). NOT for early or mid-production GPW (1942-early 1944) — these did not have a shipping plate. NOT for Willys MB — although Willys MB's also received a shipping plate from May 1944, the layout and markings differ from the Ford GPW version.
Historical context
The shipping data plate was introduced mid-1944 by the U.S. Army Ordnance Department to provide logistical information for transport and shipping. The plate stated the shipping tonnage — defined as the volume of seawater that would be displaced by the crated jeep aboard a cargo vessel — alongside weight and dimensions.
