★ Authentic data plate as used on the M2 Decontaminator during the Second World War. The M2 was a 1.5 quart pump sprayer used to neutralise chemical warfare gases such as mustard gas.
Application
This data plate was affixed to the M2 Decontaminator, a brass or copper pump sprayer of approximately 18 inches (46 cm) mounted in a special bracket under the passenger seat or on the left wing. The M2 was produced in large quantities (over 1 million units) from early 1942 to October 1943 by companies such as Fyr-Fyter Co., General Detroit Corp. and Badger Fire Extinguisher Co.
Installation notes
The plate was affixed to the M2 Decontaminator itself. The decontaminator was fixed to the vehicle with a special bracket (6 x #10 x 3/8" screws). From June 1944, ACM II composite body tubs had the fixing holes pre-punched under the passenger seat.
Historical context
The M2 Decontaminator was part of the US Army's chemical defence equipment during WWII. The apparatus was developed by the Chemical Warfare Service to protect vehicle crews against chemical attacks with mustard gas or phosgene, with the M2 spraying a neutralising liquid over the vehicle.
