Application
This set is intended for Ford GPW and Willys MB vehicles of later production that were equipped from approximately October 1942 with a torque reaction spring at the front driver's side. Not all MB/GPW vehicles had this feature; early slat grille models and some early production examples were not fitted with the torque reaction spring.
Installation notes
Please note: this set is specific to the late version using the torque reaction spring. The torque reaction spring is located on the left front leaf spring and has specific shackles (WO-A6068 and WO-A6069/WO-A6071) which are secured by this fixing set. Installation requires correct positioning of the pivot points and thorough lubrication of all rotating parts.
Compatibility
NOT suitable for early Ford GPW and Willys MB without torque reaction spring. Early slat grille jeeps and MBs up to approximately serial numbers 158,000-202,000 (depending on production date) did not have this feature. CJ-2A models were never fitted with torque reaction spring. Check whether your vehicle was originally equipped with torque reaction spring before fitting this set.
Historical context
The torque reaction spring was introduced in 1942 at the request of the Quartermaster Corps to counter the so-called 'Jeep lean' - the tendency of the jeep to pull to the right during hard braking due to axle wrap-up. A Technical Service Bulletin of 1 September 1942 described retrofit kit A-6157 with which older vehicles could be modified.
