Propshaft universal joint

Spicer-type, for front and rear axle

Professional universal joint for the propshafts of civilian Willys jeeps. This universal joint connects the yokes to the propshaft ends and ensures smooth power transmission between gearbox, transfer case and axles. Supplied complete with bearing cups and circlips.

Type

Spicer-style with grease nipple

Dimensions

±3.2" (81 mm) cup to cup

Application

Civilian Willys jeeps

Quantity per vehicle

4 pieces (front and rear axle)

Features

  • Complete with bearing cups and circlips
  • Grease nipple for maintenance
  • Suitable for front and rear propshaft
  • Both transfer case and axle end
  • Replaceable individually

★ Reliable replacement for original Spicer-type universal joints. These universal joints feature a grease nipple, allowing regular maintenance for extended service life.

Application

These universal joints fit the front and rear propshafts of CJ-2A (1946-1949), CJ-3A (1949-1953), CJ-3B (1953-1964) and M38 (1950-1952) vehicles. 4 universal joints are required per vehicle: two per propshaft (one at the transfer case end and one at the axle end).

Installation notes

Before fitting, check that the yokes and propshaft ends are clean and undamaged. Ensure the bearing cups click properly into place and the circlips are correctly fitted. After fitting, grease the universal joint via the grease nipple until fresh grease is visible at the seals. Check periodically for play by moving the propshaft back and forth.

Compatibility

Please note: this universal joint does NOT fit vehicles with Cleveland-style universal joints (which used a retaining strap with bolts). Some Willys Trucks and Station Wagons had the Cleveland-type. Check your original universal joints before ordering. Also does not fit M151-series vehicles.

Historical context

The Spicer universal joint was the standard cross for most post-war civilian Willys jeeps. The design with four bearing cups and cruciform spider proved extremely reliable in the heavy off-road use for which these vehicles were designed.
