Rear propeller shaft MB/GPW

Complete assembled with universal joints

Complete assembled rear propeller shaft for the Willys MB and Ford GPW. This critical driveline component transmits power from the transfer case to the rear differential. Fitted with universal joints and slip joint for length adjustment during suspension movement.

Type

Rear propeller shaft

Specification

Complete assembled with universal joints

Application

Willys MB / Ford GPW

Components

Propeller shaft, slip joint, universal joints, dust boots

Features

  • Complete assembled rear propeller shaft
  • With integrated universal cross joints
  • Slip joint with internal splines for length compensation
  • Fitted with grease nipples for maintenance
  • Part of Group 09 - Propeller Shaft system

★ Reproduction to WWII specifications. Essential driveline component that transmits power from the transfer case to the rear axle.

Application

Fits Willys MB (1941-1945) and Ford GPW (1942-1945). The rear propeller shaft connects the rear flange of the Dana Spicer 18 transfer case to the rear differential (Dana Spicer 25/27). Also applicable to French M201 (Hotchkiss) with identical configuration.

Installation notes

Ensure correct phasing of the universal joints during assembly — the grease nipples at both ends must be aligned (not rotated 90°). Thoroughly grease the slip joint prior to installation. Use new split pins when securing the universal joints. Check accessibility and functionality of grease nipples before installation.

Compatibility

Specific for Willys MB and Ford GPW — both Willys and Ford propeller shafts are interchangeable. Note: the front and rear propeller shafts are NOT identical — the rear shaft is longer. Not suitable for later civilian CJ models with T90 transmission without modification of position and length.

Historical context

The propeller shafts of the WWII jeep were manufactured to Dana Spicer specifications and had to withstand extreme terrain conditions. The two-piece construction with slip joint was essential to accommodate length variations during suspension movement.
