Installation notes
Before fitting, check that the steering column is correctly adjusted and that all connections to drag link and bellcrank are in good condition. The sector shaft must be fully fitted onto the splines. After fitting, check the adjustment of the steering box in centre position — very slight resistance is normal, the steering box must not bind anywhere.
Compatibility
Ross-type steering boxes were used on various variants of early military jeeps and civilian CJ models. Note: different models use different sector shaft diameters (7/8" vs 15/16") and different steering tube lengths. Check your original steering box before fitting.
Historical context
Ross Gear and Tool Company produced these robust cam-and-lever steering boxes from 1906 and supplied Willys-Overland for the production of military jeeps during WWII. TRW took over Ross in the early 1960s and continued to produce these steering boxes until 1971.
