★ Correct reproduction of the late war type steering wheel as originally produced by Sheller Manufacturing. Steel spokes offer greater strength than the earlier all-bakelite version.
Application
This steering wheel was used on Willys MB and Ford GPW built from 1943 to 1945, when the construction was changed from all-bakelite to steel spokes with bakelite rim. Also applicable to post-war models such as CJ-2A, CJ-3A, CJ-3B, M38 and M201 that use the same steering column configuration.
Installation notes
The steering wheel fits the original steering column with 36 splines. Uses standard 1-1/4" horn button kit. Fitting as original — no modifications required to steering shaft or column.
Compatibility
PLEASE NOTE: This is the late version with STEEL spokes. Early MB/GPW (1941-early 1943) had an all-bakelite steering wheel with spokes cast into the bakelite itself. From 1943 onwards, production switched to this construction with three separate steel spokes. Both types have 36 splines on the hub and fit technically on the same steering column, but for correct restoration you should choose the right type for your year of manufacture.
Historical context
During WWII, Willys switched from all-bakelite steering wheels to this construction with steel spokes to save material and increase strength. The original type was produced by Sheller Manufacturing Company.
