★ These late production aluminium data plates are characteristic of the final Ford GPW jeeps from the 1944-1945 wartime production.
Application
Specifically for Ford GPW jeeps built from mid-1944 to end of production (September 1945). Ford used different materials during the war: early GPWs had brass plates, mid-production (mid-1942 – mid-1944) had steel plates, and late production (mid-1944 – 1945) had aluminium plates such as this set.
Installation notes
The three plates are mounted on the dashboard flap (glove box door) on the passenger side. Originally, Ford data plates were fixed with rivets which are pressed in from the front and flattened at the rear. The centre plate contains the vehicle identification information (manufacturer, model GPW, serial number and Date of Delivery).
Compatibility
ONLY for Ford GPW late production (mid-1944 – end of production). NOT compatible with Willys MB (which had their own identification plates). Early and mid-production Ford GPW jeeps had plates of different material (brass resp. steel). Note: factory location can sometimes be identified by stamp details on the plate (e.g. '1/4' for Louisville KY, '4x4' for Dallas TX).
Historical context
Ford produced the GPW jeep during WWII under licence from Willys-Overland in five different factories. The transition to aluminium data plates in 1944 reflected the scarce availability of copper and brass for non-essential applications late in the war.
