Installation notes
Mounting on passenger side firewall with special bracket. Air supply via crossover tube to carburettor. Fill oil reservoir to marked line with SAE 30 or 10W-30 engine oil. Filter operates on centrifugal principle: air makes 180° turn through oil bath, coarse particles are trapped in oil, fine particles in mesh element.
Compatibility
This early type (plate/plated instructions) is correct for vehicles built between approximately June-July 1942 and October-November 1942. It succeeded the decal type (March-June 1942) and was replaced by the late type with rolled-in engraved instructions (October 1942 until end of production). Even earlier – before March 1942 until MB #124,309 – the AC Spark Plug Co. pancake model was used.
Historical context
The Oakes air cleaner was produced by Oakes Products, a division of Houdaille-Hershey Corp. During 1942, the filter went through various production variants: from decal instructions to spot-welded plate, to eventually engraved instructions directly in the housing.
