Wheel Hub Stud Left Hand Thread

1/2"-20 thread

Wheel hub stud with left hand thread for mounting wheel to hub and brake drum. This stud is used on the left side of the vehicle, where the thread direction prevents the nut from loosening during driving. Essential component for safe wheel mounting according to original specifications.

Thread

1/2"-20 left hand thread

Design

Knurled shaft for press fitting

Application

Front and rear hub left side

Per vehicle

5 pieces required per wheel

Features

  • Left hand thread (reverse thread) for left side of vehicle
  • 1/2"-20 thread specification
  • Knurled shaft for press fitting into hub/brake drum
  • Suitable wheel nut spanner: 13/16" or 3/4"
  • Sales unit: per piece

★ Precision component according to original WWII specifications. The left hand thread on the left side of the vehicle was a safety measure: the thread direction works with the rotation of the wheel, so that the nut cannot loosen during driving.

Application

Fits the categories as mentioned: CJ-2A, CJ-3A, CJ-3B, M38, M38A1. Used on the left side (driver's side) of the vehicle, both front and rear hub. Each wheel requires 5 stud specimens. The right side of the vehicle uses studs with right hand thread (standard).

Installation notes

Stud is pressed into the hub/brake drum with a hydraulic press — NEVER use a hammer, this will damage the knurled shaft. The stud goes through the brake drum and hub and protrudes for mounting the steel rim with the wheel nut. Note: left hand thread means that tightening goes anticlockwise. Always check that the stud is marked "L" for left.

Compatibility

IMPORTANT: Left hand thread is only used on the left side of the vehicle. The right side uses studs with right hand thread (standard rotation direction). Always check the marking on the head of the stud ("L" or "R") before removal. Not interchangeable with right hand thread specimens. Some vehicles have been converted over the years to entirely right hand thread — check this before ordering.

Historical context

WWII-era jeeps used both left and right hand thread wheel studs: left on the left side, right on the right side. This was a safety concept from the early automotive industry, where it was assumed that the thread direction prevented nuts from loosening due to wheel rotation. Later this proved unnecessary and the industry switched to exclusively right hand thread.
