Application
Combat wheels were standard from approximately serial number MB120700 (early 1942) on later Willys MB production and all Ford GPW vehicles. Early slat-grille MBs (until January 1942) still had solid disc wheels. The two-piece combat rims remained in use until the end of WWII and were also applied to military trailers.
Installation notes
Combat wheels are mounted with a combination of right-hand and left-hand thread wheel nuts (RH on right side of vehicle, LH on left side). For disassembly of the two-piece rim: deflate tyre, loosen eight bolts, separate both halves. When reassembling: position flap correctly around valve hole, fit inner tube, join both rim halves and tighten bolts in cross pattern. Use appropriate tools for safe fitting.
Compatibility
Combat wheels are 16 x 4.5 inches wide and suitable for 6.00 x 16 tyres (standard WWII). Also usable with 6.50 x 16 or 7.00 x 16 provided correct rim width. NOT compatible with later one-piece CJ rims or M38 standard rims (although dimensions are comparable). Note: early MBs up to serial number MB120700 used 4 inch solid disc rims and not combat wheels.
Historical context
Combat wheels were developed in 1941 by Kelsey Hayes Wheel Company with the aim of rapid tyre changing in combat conditions without special tools. The two-piece construction with optional beadlock ring enabled continued driving on a flat tyre for 40+ miles.
