Features
- Right rear axle shaft (short version)
- Hardened steel alloy for maximum strength
- Full-floating construction with 6-bolt flange mounting
- 10 splines on differential side
- Suitable for early-production vehicles with Dana 27 rear axle
★ High-quality reproduction manufactured to original specifications. The full-floating construction ensures that the axle shaft bears no vehicle weight — this is carried by the axle housing — which increases reliability and service life.
Application
Suitable for WWII military jeeps with Dana 27 full-floating rear axle, used on early production vehicles (before serial number 1345352). This is the right (passenger) side axle shaft, shorter than the left (driver) side.
Installation notes
During installation: remove the 6 flange bolts from the wheel hub. Carefully slide the old shaft outwards. When fitting the new shaft: take care not to damage the inner oil seal at the differential. Screw two flange bolts into the threaded holes of the axle flange to release the shaft if seized. Wheel hub nut torque: 150-175 lb-ft.
Compatibility
Note: this short shaft fits ONLY the right (passenger) side of Dana 27 full-floating rear axle. For the left (driver) side, a longer shaft is required (A902). Not compatible with Dana 44 semi-floating rear axle as used on later vehicles. Check whether your vehicle has a full-floating axle: identifiable by 6 flange bolts on the outside of the wheel hub.
Historical context
The Dana 27 (also known as Spicer 23-2) full-floating rear axle was used on early WWII military jeeps and was characterised by its robust construction whereby the vehicle weight is carried by the axle housing rather than by the axle shaft itself.
