Spindle bushing, bronze flanged type

For front axle Dana 25 / Dana 27

Bronze flanged spindle bushing for the front axle spindle. This bearing supports the outer drive shaft and provides a wear-resistant plain bearing in the spindle. The flanged design (later production version) suits both early threaded-end axles and later circlip axles where the flange controls axial play.

Material

Bronze

Type

Flanged bushing

Part number

WO-649783

Dimensions

ID 31.6 mm / OD 35 mm / flange Ø 44.7 mm

Features

  • Bronze construction for optimal wear resistance
  • Flanged design for correct positioning
  • For installation in front axle spindle (wheelspindle)
  • Compatible with Spicer, Rzeppa and Bendix-type axles
  • Replaces early type A-853 without flange

★ This flanged spindle bushing is the later production version that fits both early WWII jeeps and post-war CJ and M series. Required per front axle: 2 pieces (left and right).

Application

Willys MB (1941-1945), Ford GPW (1941-1945), Willys M38 (1950-1952), Willys M38-A1 (1952-1963) — all with Dana 25 front axle differential. Also post-war civilian CJ models (CJ-2A through CJ-6) with Dana 25 or Dana 27 front axles until 1971.

Installation notes

The bushing is pressed into the spindle with the flange facing outward. On early threaded-end axles (MB/GPW/M38) the shimming behind the drive flange determines axial position; the flange does not contact the shaft. On later CJ axles without threaded end, the flange does control axial play. Check upon reuse for roundness and scoring — replace if ID > 31.1 mm.

Compatibility

Suitable for all three axle types: Bendix (5 large balls), Rzeppa (6 balls) and Spicer (cross joint). The early bushing without flange (A-853) can be replaced by this flanged type — the flange does not contact the shaft on early threaded-end axles. Not compatible with Dana 44 or later heavy-duty axles without modification.

Historical context

This flanged bearing (649783) replaced during production the early type without flange (A-853). The introduction of the flange was linked to the transition to circlip-retained axles during CJ-3A production, where axial play was no longer controlled by shimming but by the flange.
