- For Autolite MZ-4113 starter motor
- Complete with spring and threaded shaft
- Counterclockwise rotation
- Easily replaceable component when gears are worn
★ The Bendix drive is a critical component of the starting system. When worn, the teeth can become damaged and produce a characteristic 'grinding' noise during starting. When replacing, always check the condition of the flywheel and bellhousing bush as well.
Application
This Bendix drive fits Autolite MZ-4113 starter motors as used in Willys MB (1941-1945), Ford GPW (1941-1945) and early CJ-2A (1946-1949) models. Compatible with both original 6 volt systems and 12 volt conversions. Works with the standard 97-tooth flywheel as originally fitted to these vehicles.
Installation notes
Check before installation that the threaded shaft of the starter motor is not damaged — a broken thread makes the entire armature unusable. The Bendix must be able to slide freely on the shaft; do not use oil or grease for lubrication, only paraffin or diesel oil. When replacing the Bendix drive, it is strongly recommended to also inspect the flywheel and bellhousing bush for wear.
Compatibility
Suitable for Autolite MZ-4113 starter (6V original, also usable on 12V conversion). Bendix drives are available in 9-tooth and 10-tooth versions — both work with the 97-tooth flywheel of MB/GPW/CJ-2A. Note: later models such as CJ-3A and M38 use a different starter (MZ-4137) with 124 or 129-tooth flywheel and require a 9-tooth Bendix. Check the starter type on your vehicle before ordering.
Historical context
The Bendix drive starter was fitted as standard during WWII on Willys MB, Ford GPW and most International and Studebaker military vehicles. This simple yet effective system uses the inertia of the gear to establish coupling with the flywheel — without additional solenoid or switches, operated solely via the foot switch.
