Brake Fluid DOT 5 Silicone 1 Litre

Non-hygroscopic, protects against corrosion

DOT 5 silicone brake fluid is specifically developed for military vehicles and classic restorations. This silicone-based fluid does not absorb moisture from the air and thus prevents internal corrosion in the brake system. Ideal for vehicles stored for extended periods.

Specification

DOT 5 Silicone

Content

1 Litre

Base

Silicone (non-glycol)

Feature

Non-hygroscopic

Features

  • Meets MIL-PRF-46176B, SAE J1705 and FMVSS 116 DOT 5
  • High dry boiling point (260°C) for reliable braking performance
  • Does not absorb moisture — protects against internal corrosion
  • Does not damage paintwork when spilt
  • Suitable for vehicles with extended periods of non-use

★ DOT 5 was introduced by the US Armed Forces for military vehicles due to its superior protection against moisture and broad temperature range. Suitable for completely rebuilt brake systems.

Application

Suitable for military vehicles with hydraulic brake systems without ABS. Used in WWII and post-war military vehicles such as jeeps, lorries and other army vehicles. Ideal for restorations and collection vehicles not driven daily.

Installation notes

IMPORTANT: DOT 5 must NOT be mixed with DOT 3, DOT 4 or DOT 5.1 (glycol-based fluids). When converting from DOT 3/4 to DOT 5, a complete flush of the brake system is required. Bleeding DOT 5 requires more care — work calmly and thoroughly, air bubbles dissolve more slowly in silicone. Open the bleed nipple before depressing the pedal, close it before releasing. Vacuum bleeder works well.

Compatibility

NOT suitable for vehicles with ABS brake systems. Only use in completely rebuilt brake systems or systems already containing DOT 5. Some modern wheel cylinders are not compatible with DOT 5 — check manufacturer specifications. The pedal may feel slightly softer than with DOT 3/4 due to the slightly compressible properties of silicone — this is normal.

Historical context

DOT 5 silicone brake fluid was developed in the 1970s for military use to enable vehicles to function reliably in extreme climates and during long-term storage. The US Armed Forces standardised on DOT 5 from the 1990s due to its non-hygroscopic properties and broad temperature range.
