★ This assembly forms the heart of the power transmission between engine and gearbox. Essential component for a correctly functioning clutch system on authentic military and civilian jeeps.
Application
This clutch fits jeeps equipped with the Willys L-134 'Go Devil' flathead engine (1941-1953) or the F-134 'Hurricane' F-head engine (1953-1971). Note: some later M38A1 vehicles had a 9¼ inch clutch — check the mounting pattern on the flywheel. The 8½ inch and 9¼ inch versions are not interchangeable.
Installation notes
Before fitting, check the flywheel for wear and the mounting pattern. Use a centralising tool to correctly align the clutch disc with the crankshaft pilot bearing. Tighten pressure plate bolts gradually in a cross pattern according to specifications. After fitting, adjust the free pedal travel to approximately 1½ inch (38 mm) before the clutch engages.
Compatibility
IMPORTANT: The M38A1 was supplied with either an 8½ inch or a 9¼ inch clutch — these are NOT interchangeable due to different mounting patterns on the flywheel. Check your existing clutch diameter before ordering. Early CJ-2A models used a clutch cable system, later models mechanical rod linkage.
Historical context
The 8½ inch clutch was used in the Willys MB and Ford GPW during WWII and remained standard on most post-war jeeps with 4-cylinder engine until the early 1970s. The Hotchkiss M201, the French licence-built version of the MB, received a reinforced clutch assembly for greater durability.
