Flywheel Ring Gear 124 Teeth

For M38 with L-134 Engine

Replacement flywheel ring gear with 124 teeth for military jeeps with 4-134 L-head engine. This ring gear mounts onto the flywheel and forms the connection between starter motor and engine. Through heating, a damaged ring gear can be easily replaced.

Material

Steel

Number of teeth

124 teeth

Application

M38 with L-134 engine

Type

Reversible mounting

Features

  • 124 teeth configuration for L-134 engine
  • Suitable for 9-tooth starter motor drive
  • Replacement part for early flywheels
  • Reversible mounting (both sides usable)
  • Compatible with manual transmissions

★ This flywheel ring gear is specific to the L-head 'Go Devil' engine and differs from the later 129-tooth version for F-head engines. Always verify the number of teeth before ordering.

Application

Suitable for M38 (1950-1952) with 4-134 L-head engine. Also applicable to CJ-3A (1949-1953, before serial number 30973), early CJ-2A models with L-134 engine, and civilian Willys vehicles (Pickup, Station Wagon, Jeepster) from the same period with L-134 engine.

Installation notes

The old flywheel ring gear must be removed from the flywheel by heating (to approximately 200-250°C). Also heat the new ring gear for installation — through expansion it slides easily over the flywheel and contracts tight when cooling. Note: this 124-tooth ring gear requires a 9-tooth starter motor drive with the correct diametral pitch. Not compatible with 10-tooth starter motors (which belong to the 97-tooth flywheel ring gear).

Compatibility

ONLY for L-134 engines. NOT suitable for later F-134 F-head engines (which use 129 teeth). NOT suitable for early MB/GPW with 97-tooth flywheel ring gear. You can verify the number of teeth on your original ring gear by removing the starter motor and a spark plug and counting through the opening.

Historical context

The 124-tooth flywheel ring gear was used during the transition period between WWII MB/GPW production and the later civilian and military models. The M38 was the military successor to the MB with improvements but still the reliable L-134 'Go Devil' engine.
