★ High-quality replacement flywheel ring gear, designed for long service life and reliable starting system operation on F-134 engines.
Application
Suitable for M38A1 (1952-1966), CJ-3B (1953-1964), CJ-5 (1955-1971), CJ-6 (1955-1971), M170, FC-150 (1957-1964), and Willys Pick-up/Station Wagon/Sedan Delivery (1953-1963) fitted with F-134 Hurricane engine. Also suitable for late CJ-3A (after serial number 30973) and some early models from 1949-1953 period with F-head engine.
Installation notes
Removing old ring gear: heat the damaged flywheel ring gear to remove it from the flywheel. Fitting new ring gear: heat the new ring gear until it expands sufficiently to slide over the flywheel, position correctly and ensure it is fully seated after cooling. Note: the transmission is best removed for this work. Always verify compatibility with the fitted starter motor (must have 9-tooth pinion).
Compatibility
DOES NOT FIT: MB, GPW, early CJ-2A, early M38 and early CJ-3A (before serial number 30973) — these use 97-tooth or 124-tooth flywheel ring gears. The 129-tooth ring gear requires a starter motor with 9-tooth pinion. Whilst the inner diameter is the same as other ring gears, the tooth count must match the starter motor for correct engagement. Always verify the existing tooth count before replacing.
Historical context
The 129-tooth flywheel ring gear was introduced for later Willys vehicles fitted with the F-134 Hurricane engine, which replaced the earlier L-134 Go Devil. This configuration became military standard for the M38A1 and remained in use until the early 1970s on civilian CJ models.
