Application
Half doors were used during WWII on military jeeps for protection against weather and wind whilst still providing adequate airflow and visibility. Fitting requires the presence of 7 body studs on each side of the vehicle (these were drilled as standard on all WWII production vehicles). Attachment to windscreen frame via supplied hinges.
Installation notes
For fitting, the 7 body studs (sockets) must be present on both sides of the body. These were standard on WWII production, but may be absent on post-war or French bodies. Hinges are mounted to the windscreen frame with L-shaped brackets. Canvas may shrink over time — if shrinkage occurs, carefully dampening and stretching with weights may help.
Compatibility
Note: Ford GPW half doors originally had a herringbone twill edge finish, whilst Willys MB examples had a gimp/leatherette edge. Both types fit functionally on both MB and GPW vehicles. Not all reproductions respect this difference. Check that your body has the required 14 studs (7 per side) — French and some reproduction bodies lack these.
Historical context
Canvas half doors were standard equipment on WWII jeeps and provided protection against the elements whilst allowing quick entry and exit. They were often removed in desert and tropical climates, but were essential in Europe and temperate zones.
