★ Correctly detailed reproduction for early MB toolboxes as originally used on slat-grill and early script Willys MB jeeps.

Application

Specific to early Willys MB jeeps (approximately November 1941 to early 1942) without glove box, with two toolboxes at the rear of the body. The early MBs had a different hinge design than later models. These hinges are spot-welded to the outside of the lid; the backing plate (tapping plate) is located on the inside of the body opening.

Installation notes

Hinges are attached by spot welding to the outside of the toolbox lid. The hinge pin is secured to the body with short screws (approximately 3/8 inch #10). A tapping plate is used on the inside of the body opening to receive the screws. On early MBs, this tapping plate could sometimes be spot-welded rather than loose. Installation requires some skill to align screws, plate and hinge eye.

Compatibility

This early version is ONLY suitable for slat-grill and early script Willys MB jeeps (up to approximately MB number 125809, March 1942) without glove box. Later MBs and GPWs with glove box do not have rear toolboxes. Not to be confused with Ford GPW hinges which may have a different fitting method.

Historical context

The earliest Willys MB production had two toolboxes at the rear of the body instead of a glove box. This configuration was used until early 1942, when the glove box was introduced and the toolboxes were discontinued. These specific hinges are characteristic of that early production period and are now rarely found in original condition.
