★ This late version skid plate features an adapted design with clearance for the larger internal expanding handbrake drum and an additional mounting hole for the rubber transfer case support.
Application
Suitable for vehicles with internal expanding handbrake system on the transfer case. This system was introduced from September 1944 (Willys MB serial number 373337) and the late plate from March 1945. Also used on early post-war civilian models with Dana 18 transfer case and internal expanding handbrake system.
Installation notes
The skid plate mounts between the gearbox crossmember and the bottom of the transfer case. Note the correct orientation: the largest round hole is on the passenger side, towards the rear. The plate has a cutout at the rear to provide clearance for the internal expanding handbrake drum. Check that all mounting holes align, including the additional hole for the rubber transfer case support.
Compatibility
NOT compatible with external contracting brake system – this requires a different plate without cutout. This late version is specific to the internal expanding system and has one additional mounting hole compared to the earlier version (September 1944 - March 1945). Check which handbrake system is fitted to your vehicle before ordering.
Historical context
Willys switched in September 1944 from the external contracting handbrake system to an internal expanding system, which was more reliable and better protected. The skid plate was adapted with a cutout for the larger drum, and in March 1945 this late version was introduced with improved mounting via an additional hole for the rubber transfer case support.
