Engine front plate chain-type early

For L-134 Go Devil engine with chain drive

Engine front plate for early L-134 Go Devil engines with chain drive. This plate is mounted between the engine block and the camshaft chain cover and is essential for correct operation of the chain drive.

Engine type

L-134 Go Devil with chain drive

Application

Early WWII production

Version

Early chain-type

Manufacturer marking

Ford GPW

Features

  • Specific for L-134 engines with chain drive
  • Suitable for early WWII production (1941-1945)
  • Mounts between engine block and camshaft chain cover
  • Essential for engine restoration with chain-type
  • Original Ford GPW specification

★ Critical component for correct restoration of early WWII jeeps with chain drive. Not compatible with later gear-driven engines.

Application

For L-134 Go Devil engines with chain drive (timing chain) as used in 1941-1945 production and early CJ-2A (1946-1947) with chain-driven engine. Not suitable for gear-driven engines introduced from mid-1946 onwards.

Installation notes

Mounts between engine block and camshaft chain cover. On early chain engines, the front plate featured a large round opening with a flat brass thrust ring through which the camshaft passed. Use correct gasket (chain-type gasket) between plate and engine block. Note: chain-type and gear-type plates are NOT interchangeable.

Compatibility

ONLY for L-134 engines with chain drive. Not suitable for later gear-driven engines from CJ-2A engine #44418 (approx. May 1946). Note the difference: early chain-drive has characteristic boss/flat plate above water pump, late gear-drive has different configuration with oil jet for gear lubrication.

Historical context

The early L-134 Go Devil engines in WWII jeeps had chain drive for the camshaft. From mid-1946, Willys switched to the more reliable gear drive, which brought significant differences in engine components.
