Crankshaft Timing Gear

For L-134 engine with gear-drive

Replacement timing gear for the crankshaft of the Willys L-134 'Go Devil' engine with gear-drive. This component is essential for driving the camshaft on engines that changed from the original chain-drive to direct gear-drive from mid-1946 onwards.

Application

L-134 with gear-drive

Engine type

134 ci L-head flathead

Drive system

Gear-drive (gear on gear)

Position

Crankshaft, lower engine

Features

  • Replacement crankshaft timing gear for L-134 engine
  • For engines with gear-drive system only
  • Fits both L-head and F-head 134 ci engines with gear-drive
  • Part of the timing set
  • Requires special puller for removal

★ Note: this gear is exclusively suitable for engines with direct gear-drive. Early engines (MB/GPW and early CJ-2A up to approx. May 1946) use a timing chain with sprockets and require different parts.

Application

Suitable for Willys L-134 and F-134 engines with gear-drive timing system. This system was introduced from engine no. 44418 (approximately May 1946) and became standard on late CJ-2A (from mid-1946), CJ-3A, CJ-3B, M38, M38A1 and early CJ-5 models. Not suitable for MB, GPW, M201 or early CJ-2A with chain-drive.

Installation notes

During installation: crankshaft gear sits on a key and sometimes requires a puller for removal. Timing marks on both crankshaft and camshaft gears must be correctly aligned during installation. Consult specifications for correct alignment — incorrect timing causes poor engine performance or damage.

Compatibility

CRITICAL: there are two systems — chain-drive (chain with sprockets, 1941-1946) and gear-drive (gear on gear, from 1946). These are NOT interchangeable. Check your engine: remove timing cover and verify whether you have a chain or gears. If in doubt: check engine number or seek advice.

Historical context

The Willys L-134 'Go Devil' engine was originally built during WWII with chain-drive. From mid-1946, Willys switched to a more robust gear-drive configuration with fibre gear on the camshaft and steel gear on the crankshaft, improving reliability and ease of maintenance for civilian applications.
