Application
This starter motor is intended for the Willys CJ-5 fitted with the 4-134 F-head Hurricane engine. The CJ-5 was produced from 1955 to 1971 with this engine. Also suitable for CJ-3B (1953-1964) and other Willys models with the same F-134 engine such as the Willys Pickup Truck and Station Wagon (1952-1964). Please note: check your flywheel ring gear configuration (124 or 129 teeth) and mounting dimensions for compatibility.
Installation notes
Important check before fitting: measure the distance between mounting holes (centre to centre, nominal 4.22 inches) and the diameter of the pilot hole in the bellhousing (nominal 3.241 inches). Check the number of teeth on your flywheel (124 or 129 teeth) — different F-134 configurations use different flywheels. If in doubt: consult the original Auto-Lite starter numbers (MDM-6005, MDU-7004, MCH-6207, MCH-6203) for your vehicle.
Compatibility
PLEASE NOTE: The F-134 Hurricane engine was built in different configurations. Early models (1953-1958) typically used a 124-tooth flywheel, later models (1958-1971) a 129-tooth flywheel. Check your flywheel before ordering a starter motor. This starter motor is NOT compatible with the L-134 Go-Devil engine (Willys MB, GPW, early CJ-2A) due to different bellhousing and flywheel. When converting from 6V to 12V: ensure your complete electrical system (dynamo/alternator, coil, voltage regulator) is also 12V.
Historical context
The F-134 Hurricane engine was introduced in 1950 as the successor to the L-134 Go-Devil. Thanks to its characteristic F-head configuration (inlet valves in the head, exhaust valves in the block), this 134 ci four-cylinder produced 75 bhp — at the time the most powerful four-cylinder in American mass production. The CJ-5 received this engine from 1955 until the end of production in 1971.
