★ Quality bearing kit for reliable overhauling of the classic Ross steering box. Often used in combination with the sector shaft repair kit for a complete steering box overhaul.
Application
Suitable for Willys CJ-2A (1946-1949), CJ-3A (1949-1953) and CJ-3B (1953-1964) with original Ross steering box and 7/8" sector shaft. This bearing kit is often combined with part number 646084 for worm gear bearings and 805123 for the complete sector shaft kit during a full steering box overhaul.
Installation notes
This bearing kit pertains to the worm gear side of the steering box. For a complete overhaul, in addition to this bearing kit, the sector shaft, bushings, gasket and oil seal are also required (see sector shaft repair kit 805123). Correct adjustment of the bearings is crucial for play-free steering. Advice: during overhaul, always replace the gasket (639119) and oil seal (927645) as well.
Compatibility
Only for Ross steering boxes with 7/8" sector shaft. Note: M38 and M38A1 military models sometimes use a 15/16" sector shaft – check the diameter of your sector shaft before ordering. Early MB and GPW (1941-1945) use the same Ross steering box, but CJ-5 models after 1966 with V6 engine often have a 15/16" version.
Historical context
The Ross steering box was the original factory steering mechanism for the Willys CJ-2A from 1946 onwards and was continued on the CJ-3A and CJ-3B. This worm-and-sector design was reliable and simple to maintain, and is still used in restorations today.
