★ Essential tool for applying historically correct shipping stencils as applied to vehicles prior to overseas transport during WWII.
Application
Shipping stencils were applied during WWII to jeeps and other military vehicles prior to shipment from the United States. Until 1944 this data was stencilled (thereafter the shipping plate was introduced). The marking included length, width in inches, shipping and combat weight in pounds, usually in 1 or 2 inch white letters on OD paint or on a matt black panel. Location varied: passenger side behind door opening, inside or outside of windshield skin, or on the cowl.
Installation notes
Apply the stencil to a clean, dry surface. Secure the stencil to prevent shifting. Use thick white paint and dab (do not brush) with a stencil brush or foam to avoid runs. Remove the stencil carefully before the paint is completely dry.
Compatibility
This shipping stencil is suitable for Willys MB, Ford GPW, Hotchkiss M201 and CJ models. The shipping data on the stencil can be adapted to the specific vehicle. Early jeeps (pre-1944) had stencilled shipping data; from 1944 onwards the metal shipping plate was typically used on the dashboard.
Historical context
Shipping markings were mandatory on all US Army vehicles prior to overseas shipment during WWII. The stencils contained crucial logistical information for sea transport and handling at ports and depots.
