Installation notes
During installation, position correctly with thrust washers at front and rear. Steel thrust washer at rear must be locked with pin in housing. Bronze thrust washers on both sides protect the hardened steel of the gear faces. Check axial play after installation: ideally 0.003"-0.006" (0.076-0.152mm). Excessive play may cause thrust washers to rotate, resulting in damage to the housing.
Historical context
The cluster gear formed the heart of the robust manual transmissions that gave WWII military vehicles their reliability. These transmissions without synchromesh required skill from the driver, but were virtually indestructible under severe combat conditions.
